Moong Dal & Spinach Idli


  • Green moong dal (split green gram) raw – 2 tbsp
  • Blanched and roughly chopped spinach (palak) – 3/4th cup
  • Green chillies
  • Roughly chopped – 1
  • Urad dal/Gram dal -1tsp
  • Fresh low fat curd – 1 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Fruit salt / eno – ½ tsp


  1. Combine the green moong dal (soaked for 3 hours and drained), spinach and green chillies and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste without using any water.
  2. Transfer the mixture into a bowl, add the curds, soaked gram dal or urad dal and salt and mix well.
  3. Just before steaming, add the fruit salt to the batter and pour 2 tsp water over it.
  4. When the bubbles form, mix gently.
  5. Grease the idli moulds using less oil, put spoonfuls of the batter into idli moulds and steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till the idlis are cooked.
  6. Cool slightly, demould and serve.
