Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is one of the most serious heat-related illness, caused by the overheating of body, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. When the body becomes unable to control its temperature, the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.

Symptoms & Complications:

  • Altered mental state or behavior

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Flushed skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Racing heart rate
  • Headache

 

Complications:

Heatstroke can result in a number of complications, depending on how long the body temperature is high. Severe complications include:

1) Vital organ damage : Without a quick response to lower body temperature, heatstroke can cause your brain or other vital organs to swell, possibly resulting in permanent damage.

2) Death: Without prompt and adequate treatment, heatstroke can be fatal.

Protect against sunburn
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated

Many studies have proven that 40-50% of people suffer from heat stroke which is predictable and preventable. Here are some steps to prevent heat stroke during hot weather:

  • Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing
  • Protect against sunburn
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take extra precautions with certain medications
  • Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day
  • Limit time spent working or exercising in heat
  • Be cautious if you’re at increased risk
  • Drink water and plenty of it!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, daily fluid intake recommendations vary by age, sex, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Start by drinking a cup of water each morning when you wake up or a glass before bed. Have another glass with every meal. Drink one or two cups after working out, etc.
